THE financial controller of Cosco Corporation has to pay a civil penalty of $320,000 to the The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) for insider trading.

 

Mr Teo Chuan Teck bought shares of Cosco, a company listed on the mainbboard of the Singapore Exchange Securities, on five ccasions between Jan 15 and July 31, 2007.

 

His purchases included over-the-counter (OTC) transactions in contracts for differences (CFDs) relating to the shares of Cosco.

 

As Financial Controller of Cosco at the time, he was in possession of non-public price sensitive information about the company, said MAS in a statement on Thursday.

 

These related to the securing of shipbuilding contracts by Cosco and the company's financial results for FY2006, and the first and second quarters of FY2007.

 

Mr Teo admitted to civil penalty liability for contravening the Securities and agreed to pay S$320,000 to MAS without court action.

 

'Mr Teo has cooperated fully during the course of MAS' investigation,' said MAS.

 

Mr Shane Tregillis, Deputy Managing Director (Market Conduct), of MAS, said: 'MAS will take enforcement action against insider trading even where the dealings are transacted in OTC financial products, such as CFDs.

 

'Individuals should not think that they can avoid detection by dealing in such products rather than in the listed securities themselves.'

 

 

 

Cosco financial controller 'fined' $320,000 by MAS for insider trading
